Program:
STRAVINSKY Apollon Musagète
TCHAIKOVSKY Rococo Variations
BEETHOVEN Rondino
BEETHOVEN Selections from Creatures of Prometheus

American cellist Alisa Weilerstein brings her intensity and grace to Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations, a warhorse for cellists. Tchaikovsky’s heart-on-the-sleeve outpourings are preceded by Stravinsky’s Apollo, a ballet that marked the beginning of a significant partnership between Balanchine and Stravinsky. We’ll play dance music of a wholly different variety with selections from Beethoven’s first major work for the stage, Creatures of Prometheus.

About Alisa Weilerstein:

At 27 years old, Weilerstein is already a veteran of the classical music scene, performing with the nation’s top orchestras, giving recitals in music capitals throughout the U.S. and Europe, and regularly appearing at prestigious festivals. She was also recently invited by First Lady Michelle Obama to take part in the White House classical music workshops and concert. The intensity and passion of Weilerstein’s playing has regularly been lauded, as has the spontaneity and sensitivity of her interpretations. After a recent performance, the New York Times commented that, “[Ms. Weilerstein] radiated such concentration and pleasure, not only in the part she was playing but also in the symphony of sound all around her that watching her became a lesson in the art of listening.”

Notes on a trip through Austria...

"I hardly consider myself an authority on Austrian cuisine, though I’m no stranger to it either, having traveled through Austria on a number of occasions. Vienna, of course, is home to Wiener Schnitzel, which I’ve eagerly sampled many times through the years. In February of 2009, on Orpheus’ European tour, we visited the restaurant Figlmüller, which boasts the “best schnitzel in Vienna.” My fourteen year- old son, Noah, accompanied me along with a few other orchestra members and their kids, and we were not disappointed. The schnitzel arrives on HUGE plates, as big as a large American pizza pie, with the most delicious and crispy surface, fried to perfection. Add plenty of fresh lemon juice, and you do feel you’re experiencing the “real” Vienna. And if you love wine, that schnitzel goes wonderfully with a glass of Gemischter Satz, a Viennese specialty. PROST!"
