Orpheus Chamber Orchestra is pleased to announce that its 2006 Annual Patrons Gala is slated for Thursday, April 27, 2006 at New York's Metropolitan Club.
The festive evening begins at 6:30 p.m. with cocktails in the Grand Foyer of the Club, followed by a concert at 7:30 p.m. with Orpheus and special guest artist Zhang Qiang from Beijing. This exclusive, black tie event includes a dinner at 8:30 p.m. and also features a live auction. Honorees for the gala are the renowned, Oscar-winning composer Tan Dun and philanthropist, Edmund C. Duffy.
Orpheus musicians will be joined by Zhang Qiang, a legendary master of the Chinese pipa, in a performance of Tan Dun's Concerto for Pipa and Strings as well as audience favorites spanning the boundaries of Eastern and Western classical and popular music. Guests will delight in the music of Mozart, Debussy, and Paganini in a brilliant display of virtuosity and versatility.
Composer Tan Dun, an Academy Award® winner for his Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon film score, has made an indelible mark on the world's music scene with a creative repertoire that spans the boundaries of classical, multimedia, Eastern, and Western musical systems. Counting among his additional honors a Grammy® Award and the Grawemeyer Award for classical composition, Tan Dun's current commissions include new works for the Metropolitan Opera and the Berlin Philharmonic.
Philanthropist Edmund C. Duffy, will also be honored by Orpheus for his extraordinary contribution to the arts and education, and for his visionary support of Orpheus' unique education program including its groundbreaking initiative for talented conservatory students, The Orpheus Institute at The Juilliard School. A long time supporter of Orpheus, Mr. Duffy is a Trustee of the Peter Jay Sharp Foundation and Partner at Skadden, Arps where he works extensively on international transactions and is a leader of the firm's Asia practice.
Orpheus' 2006 gala will bring to life, in an intimate setting, the magical energy of this extraordinary music and demonstrate the authentic passion that has made Orpheus synonymous with innovation and excellence around the globe. All proceeds will provide essential support for Orpheus' excellent artistic, touring, and education programs during its 2005-06 season.
