A groundbreaking 4-year commissioning project featuring new works by
Hartke, Theofanidis, Moravec and others
Stephen Hartke’s A Brandenburg Autumn launches The New Brandenburgs
commissioning project at Carnegie Hall on December 2. This project will
create six new concertos inspired by the original six “Brandenburg”
Concertos. Each of the new pieces will use instrumentation closely matched
to that of the related Bach Concerto. December 2nd introduces the first
commission, Stephen Hartke’s A Brandenburg Autumn, which is inspired by
Bach’s “Brandenburg” Concerto No. 1. In the 2007-2008 season, Christopher
Theofanidis will introduce his new work, modeled after Concerto No. 3. Also
commissioned for future seasons is Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Paul
Moravec, with three additional composers soon to be announced. Orpheus is
scheduled to complete The New Brandenburgs in the 2009-2010 season,
culminating with a performance of all six commissions paired with the six
Bach concertos.
Stephen Hartke’s A Brandenburg Autumn is jointly commissioned by the Serge
Koussevitzky Music Foundation in the Library of Congress and Orpheus Chamber
Orchestra. Christopher Theofanidis’ new work is commissioned by the Orpheus
Chamber Orchestra with funds provided by the Mary Flagler Cary Charitable
Trust.
