Orpheus Institute @ The Juilliard School

The Orpheus Institute @ The Juilliard School is now in its second year, having completed a successful pilot year which featured musician-led performances at Alice Tully Hall, Carnegie Hall and the Peter Jay Sharp Theater, as well as a range of arts leadership workshops on topics including programming and fundraising.

During the course of the 05/06 season, members of the Orpheus “family” assisted students to find their own artistic voices, develop increased self-confidence and self-awareness in large musician-led ensembles, and provided innovative seminars on topics ranging from orchestral programming to non-profit finance and governance. Several young artists in these programs demonstrated exceptional talent and maturity and were provided with opportunities to work side-by-side with Orpheus. We are pleased to report that several Orpheus Institute students have now joined the Orpheus sub roster and will help to form the next generation of Orpheus members.

The Orpheus Institute provides students with instruction and experience in crucial arts leadership skill sets, from methods of musical communication to administrative problem solving. Together, Orpheus and Juilliard are helping to train a new generation of musical entrepreneurs, prepared to lead in an evolving 21st century arts marketplace by creating a unique working environment where students are empowered to make their own artistic and career decisions.

The successful launch of this program led to increased course offerings for the 06/07 year, including the newly formed Juilliard Chamber Orchestra, a for-credit ensemble class based on the Orpheus model. Course offerings include:
