The purpose of Composition in the Classroom is to teach music cognition to middle school and high school students in an interactive format and to engage young audiences in new music through creating original musical compositions, hearing their own musical creations performed live by Orpheus, attending Orpheus rehearsals, and attending live premiere performances at Carnegie Hall.
The long term goals of this program are:
An additional goal of Composition in the Classroom is for students to experience the creation of new classical music by attending a rehearsal and subsequent performance of a new work commissioned by Orpheus. Student groups will attend a CORE Orpheus rehearsal at Riverside Church, will meet and interact with one of Orpheus’ current commissioned composers, and will attend the subsequent Carnegie Hall performance, along with their parents and teachers, as guests of Orpheus.
This program will take place in two schools, P.S. 333 on the Upper West Side and Baruch High School at Baruch College. Two classes of approximately 25 students from each school will work collaboratively to produce original musical compositions, approximately 5-10 minutes in length. At the end of the project, Orpheus will host a concert at each school to perform the four completed student compositions. Beata Moon, who has established herself both as a talented composer and a dedicated teaching artist, will be leading Composition in the Classroom in 06/07.
